Sophia Shuvalova's practice is an extension of figurative drawing and painting, combining classical techniques and mediums with experimental materials, deconstructive methodologies and cross-disciplinary exploration. She investigates psychological, philosophical and esoteric ideas through a focus on the nuanced relationship between subject and object, perceptions of the animate and the inanimate and the endeavoured reconciliation between finality and ephemera. Heavy with symbolism and taking influences both from Academic and Christian Orthodox art her works often confront personal tensions relating to the issues of mortality, objectification and dissociation.
